POIL UEDA brings an unexpected encounter between rock, punk, world music, chamber music and raw madness. It is a Franco-Japanese project, consisting of the experimental rock/contemporary band PoiL from Lyon and Junko Ueda from Tokyo, an eminent figure of the Japanese medieval epic storytelling accompanied by the satsuma-biwa, and the Buddhist shômyô chant.
The band PoiL Ueda released the self-titled album on March 3, 2023. The album testifies to an exceptional combination of warm, profound, soulful vocals and meandering melodies in the convincing singing of Junko Ueda and the organic experimental rock madness of “monster” PoiL. The content of the album is based on the 13th-century Japanese epic tale Heike-Monogatari.
Junko’s stories accompanied by satsuma-biwa surf freely on the French band’s tumultuous wave pulsing with brashness and precision.
In addition to Junko Ueda (voice, satsuma-biwa), this joint project consists of PoiL band members: Antoine Arnera (keyboards, voice), Boris Cassone (guitar, voice), Benoît Lecomte (acoustic bass) and Guilhem Meier (drums, voice).
