RING RING FESTIVAL

Ring Ring is an exciting story that has been ongoing for almost three decades. It’s a prestigious space for artists who love a challenge, as well as for curious audiences eager to broaden their horizons. Ring Ring is a moment to celebrate high-quality, diverse music, but also an opportunity for wonderful, lively conversations and socializing before and after concerts.

The International New Music Festival Ring Ring has been held every May in Belgrade since 1996. It is geared towards a diverse urban audience, aiming to showcase the latest trends in the global music scene each year, while also hosting some world-renowned artists: Ken Vandermark, Fred Frith, The Ex, Tuxedomoon, Matthew Shipp, Irene Schweizer, Otomo Yoshihide, Peter Brötzmann, Hamid Drake…

New music, improv, avant-garde jazz, new rock, electronic music, electro-acoustic forms, contemporary music, free jazz, and a combination of various genres – all are part of the festival’s program.

The festival is an excellent opportunity for the local audience to get acquainted with such music. Still, it is also a significant platform for local artists to showcase themselves, even to “break the ice”. Thus, some young artists and bands at this festival have taken some of their first important steps in their careers (Félix Lajkó, Ognjen and Friends, Unexpected Force, Split, BelgradeYard SoundSystem, New Art Forum, Paniks, Dragon’s Fuel, Ana Never, Blank Disc, Svetlana Spajić…).

Some of the local artists have collaborated with foreign guests at the festival. In this way, Ring Ring opened the doors to the world stage for them.

In honour of the Serbian artists, as well as their successful collaborations with foreign creators, and to mark the 25th anniversary of the festival, the Ring Ring Association, the organizer of the event, released in late 2021 an audio edition “Ring Ring, 25 Years – Local Artists”. This unique compilation has no counterpart in the current Serbian discography and has been very well received by journalists, critics, and organisers throughout Europe, which is also a form of necessary promotion of the local scene abroad.

The Ring Ring Festival has been supported by: the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia, the City of Belgrade, the Embassy of the United States, the Embassy of Norway, the Embassy of Sweden, the Embassy of Finland, Radio Television of Serbia, Radio Belgrade 3, Goethe-Institut, Austrian Cultural Forum, Collegium Hungaricum, French Institute, Cervantes Institute, Italian Cultural Institute, Ministry of Culture of Slovenia, City of Bern, City of Graz, Styria Province, Canton of Zurich, Adam Mickiewicz Institute, Pro Helvetia, Jewish Cultural Center Oneg Shabbat, Music Information Center Serbia…
