POCKET GLOBE FESTIVAL

The “Pocket Globe” World Music Festival began its life in Novi Sad in 2022. The first edition was held from November 10 to 13, 2022, under the auspices of the “Novi Sad – European Capital of Culture” project, within the program arc “Other? Europe”.

Novi Sad is a city that lacked a world music festival, but in which numerous steps have been taken in the direction of creating a world music scene. Thus, the “Pocket Globe” festival itself is a natural continuation of the world music concert series of the same name, which has been held in “Eđšeg – Cultural Station” since September 2019.

The organizer of the “Pocket Globe” festival is the “Ring Ring” Association, which has extensive experience in organizing concerts, festivals and related events (“Ring Ring”, “Todo Mundo”, “Zajedno Zusammen”, “Swiss Music Days”, etc.).

The first “Pocket Globe” festival included six concerts, three lectures and one workshop session – events organized at four locations: Novi Sad Synagogue, Youth Theatre, Labat Studio (Petrovaradin Fortress), and Svilara Cultural Station.

The concerts were performed by artists and bands from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, Slovenia, Serbia, Cyprus, France, Morocco, Iran, and the USA: Damir Imamović (Trio Singer of Tales), Boris Kovač New Ritual Ensemble, Monsieur Doumani, Bab L’ Bluz, Shira utfila, and the duo of Kayhan Kalhor and Erdal Erzincan.

The band Bab L’ Bluz also led a workshop session with musicians from Novi Sad, and two leading members of the band – Yousraa Mansour and Brice Bottin – gave a lecture on ”Gnawa music and the role of women in the music of Morocco”. The other two lectures were given by Damir Imamović (topic: “Saz in Sarajevo”) and Kayhan Kalhor (“Music of Iran, principles and improvisation”).

The second “Pocket Globe” festival, held from November 9th to 11th, 2023, encompassed six concerts, two lectures, one workshop, one music session, and one presentation – events organized across four locations: Serbian National Theatre, SKCNS Fabrika, Labat Studio (Petrovaradin Fortress), and Zenit Books.

The concerts featured artists and bands from Serbia, Niger, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Italy: The Cyclist Conspiracy, Bombino, Jasna Jovićević feat. Bojan Bojić, Iva Bittova and Vladimir Vaclavek, Nogaband, and Stefano Saletti & Banda Ikona.

Iva Bittova also led a workshop with members of the Children’s Opera Studio at SNP, Vladimir Vaclavek held a session with local musicians, while Michal Noga (Nogaband) and Stefano Saletti delivered two lectures (“Rich and Vital, Old Music of Slovakia” and “Sabir – Lost Language of the Mediterranean” ). Additionally, a presentation on the “Creative Europe – Culture” program was held in collaboration with Creative Europe Desk Serbia.

The festival has been supported by: Novi Sad 2022 Foundation, City of Novi Sad, Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Serbia, “Sounds of Europe” (Creative Europe), French Institute in Serbia, Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrade, Slovak Arts Council, Remix Press, Etnoumlje magazine, and Music Information Centre of Serbia.
