Antal Kovac

Antal Kovács Jr. is one of the best-known Vlach Roma musicians, songwriters, and band leaders in Central Europe. Born in Budapest in 1973 to a traditional Vlach Roma family, he became involved in Jenő Zsigó’s Summer camp for Roma children and a weekly Roma club at the age of 9. It was at this club that Ando Drom was formed in 1984; the band performed until 1988, giving hundreds of concerts in Hungary and other European countries.

After Ando Drom, Kovács founded Romano Drom as a family band, which has been performing on the world’s most prominent stages of world music for 25 years. As a songwriter, he has worked alongside his bands with Chico and the Gipsies, Anima Sound System, and on the “Somnakaj Gipsy Musical” with Péter Müller (an underground legend, poet, and musical author in Hungary).

Kovács has also founded Olah Gipsy Beats, and worked on the Vagabundo and Gipsy Mirage projects. Always open and capable of embracing new cultural patterns and diverse fields of music, Antal Kovács as an artist navigates a broad spectrum – from various traditions to modern electronics.
